Speech by Gottfried Wagner, for the Inaugural Raymond Georis Lecture, “More Europe – and the role of foundations”.
“You all do fantastic work at home,” he said, but what is needed is a 3 to 5 year pact where foundations would complement their work at home with a resolutely European perspective. He warned of the danger of carrying on with business as usual, despite its proven success, given the current crisis situation. He stressed that it is not enough to be merely a supporter of the Union, focusing on building capacity and enhancing our operating environment, if foundations are disengaged from the larger political process. He concluded by challenging foundations to overcome what he called “the handicap of their national status”, noting that the debate must start at home at board level within individual foundations.
